Food Chain

Human beings are at the top of the food chain. MAny of us have little idea where the food we buy from the supermarket comes from - whether the countries, or the animals or plants or other materials that go into them. We know just as little about the packaging they come in, or how they travelled to reach us.

Apart from health issues, there many other aspects we shoud be concerned about when it comes to our food. This includes the amounts and kinds of pesticides and supplements used, the energy used in their transport, refrigeration and packaging, and the pollution created. What damage is being caused to the environment at the source? The answers are not always obvious - for example, coming by boat from New Zealand might use less energy than a flight from Spain.

There are also human issues - is a poor country growing cash crops to get the money to pay off loans instead of growing food to feed its own population? Is the farmer getting a fair price?
